When a garden pond begins to lose water, the results can be frustrating for both wildlife and the pond’s owner. This was the case in Midhurst, where a large, well-established pond was suffering from persistent water loss, and the cause wasn't immediately obvious.
Case Study Overview
1. Identifying the Problem
The client contacted FishLife Pond Services after noticing their pond level kept dropping. Upon inspection, our team discovered that the liner had degraded over time and was no longer watertight. A full re-lining was the only long-term solution.
2. Refurbishment process and materials used
We removed the old liner and cleaned the base.
Installed a heavy-duty protective underlay and a 0.75mm EPDM black liner for long-term durability and flexibility.
Constructed a concrete collar around the entire perimeter of the pond for extra structural integrity.
Built a semi-submerged retaining wall using York cropped walling, set in sand and cement, to enhance both function and aesthetics.
3. Filtration & Aeration
Although the pond had an existing pump, it was too powerful for the intended fountain display. We replaced it with a more suitable and efficient OASE Filtral 9000 UVC unit, which combines mechanical filtration, UV clarifying, and a built-in fountain display. This ensures clean, clear water while creating a beautiful visual feature.
4. Planting & Wildlife Enhancement
We created a dedicated planting shelf, providing a space for aquatic plants to thrive.
Supplied and planted a variety of pond plants to improve oxygenation and biodiversity.
Introduced hornwort, a native British submerged plant known for its oxygenating properties and ability to outcompete algae.
5. The Outcome
The re-lined pond now holds water reliably and looks fantastic. The combination of clean edges, structural improvements, and planting has created a naturalistic habitat that is not only visually appealing but also welcoming to wildlife. The OASE Filtral unit ensures ongoing water clarity, and the new planting provides excellent cover and habitat for aquatic life.
“This project was hard work; the rocks were hefty, but we’re really proud of the result. It’s a lovely pond in a beautiful garden, and it should now stay healthy and watertight for years to come.”
