A complete pond transformation by FishLife Pond Services using OASE pond equipment, natural rockwork, planting and lighting

This project began with an old pond that no longer suited the garden. It was unattractive, leaking and no longer providing the kind of natural, relaxing water feature the customer wanted.

Rather than simply patching the existing pond, FishLife Pond Services provided a quote to build an entirely new pond from the ground up, this time designed as a more natural ecosystem-style pond with improved filtration, a waterfall, natural stone edging, planting and pond lighting.

The result was a complete transformation. In just four days, the old leaking pond was replaced with a beautiful, natural-looking water feature that now sits comfortably within the garden and surrounding landscape.

The problem: an old pond that leaked and lacked appeal

The original pond had become tired, formal and unattractive. It was also leaking, which meant the customer was left with a pond that was both visually disappointing and practically unreliable.

A leaking pond can quickly become frustrating. Water levels drop, fish and plants can be affected, and repeated temporary repairs often fail to solve the underlying issue.

For this project, the best solution was not to repair the old pond but to start again with a new design that would be stronger, more natural and better suited to the garden.

The brief: build a new ecosystem-style pond

The customer wanted a pond that looked more attractive, worked properly and felt more in keeping with the garden.

The aim was to create a pond that would:

  • Replace the leaking and unattractive original pond

  • Feel more natural and better suited to the garden

  • Include reliable filtration and circulation

  • Add movement and sound through a waterfall

  • Provide evening interest with pond lighting

  • Create a healthier, more enjoyable water feature

The FishLife solution

FishLife Pond Services rebuilt the pond using a more natural layout, rockwork and planting scheme. The new pond was shaped to create a softer, more organic feel. Natural stone was used around the edges to disguise the liner and create a much more attractive finish. Planting areas were incorporated to help the pond settle into the garden and support a healthier pond environment.

A waterfall was added to bring movement, sound and additional oxygenation to the pond. This helped turn the pond from a static water body into a living feature with a more natural atmosphere. Lighting was also installed, allowing the pond to be enjoyed in the evening as well as during the day.

OASE equipment installed

As part of the project, FishLife installed high-quality OASE pond equipment to support reliable long-term performance.

The installation included:

  • OASE AquaMax Eco Premium pump to power the waterfall

  • OASE FiltoClear 13000 Set to support filtration and water clarity

  • OASE Edging and Spikes to help form a secure pond edge

  • Pond lighting to enhance the finished feature after dark

Together, the OASE pump and filtration system gave the new pond the circulation and filtration support needed for reliable day-to-day performance.

OASE Edging and Spikes were also used to help form and secure the pond edge, creating a cleaner and more stable finish around the pond.

The challenge: hot weather and rock-hard ground

This project was completed during very hot weather, which made the work physically demanding. One of the biggest challenges was installing the OASE Edging and Spikes into extremely hard ground. The ground was so dry and compacted from the baking sunshine that the team had to use a jack-hammer to loosen the ground before the edging system could be properly installed.

This added difficulty to the build, but it was important to get the edging system into place correctly. A secure, well-formed pond edge is essential for both the appearance and long-term structure of the pond. Despite the challenging conditions, the project was completed in four days.

The result: a complete pond transformation

The finished pond is a huge improvement on the original.

It now offers:

  • A softer, more natural look within the garden

  • Reliable water movement from the new waterfall

  • Improved filtration and circulation

  • Planted areas to help the pond settle into the landscape

  • A much more attractive finish around the pond edge

  • Evening impact from the installed lighting

  • A calmer, more enjoyable feature for the customer

Most importantly, the customer was over the moon with the finished result.

Why choose an ecosystem-style pond?

An ecosystem-style pond is designed to feel more natural than a formal pond. Instead of relying only on hard edges and simple water containment, it uses shape, rockwork, planting, circulation and filtration to create a more balanced and attractive environment.

Benefits can include:

  • A softer, more natural appearance

  • Better integration with the surrounding garden

  • More opportunities for aquatic and marginal planting

  • Improved habitat value for wildlife

  • A more relaxing atmosphere

  • A pond that feels like part of the landscape rather than a separate feature

For homeowners who want their pond to become a feature rather than a problem, an ecosystem-style rebuild can be an excellent option.
